AI Image Generation

Best Leonardo.Ai Alternatives in 2026

Leonardo.Ai is still one of the few tools that puts many models, custom model training, a real-time canvas, video and upscaling behind a single token balance, and if that breadth is what keeps your workflow together you should stay. Switch if you need correctly spelled text in images (Ideogram), true SVG output (Recraft), a daily rather than token-metered free allowance (Krea), stock assets and annual credits in the same subscription (Magnific), or indemnity-grade commercial safety (Adobe Firefly). Midjourney is the strongest all-round Leonardo.Ai alternative for people whose real job is making one excellent image at a time.

Why people look beyond Leonardo.Ai

  • The free tier is public-only, so nothing you make on it is private or fully yours
  • The best third-party models on Leonardo keep burning tokens even after your allowance runs out
  • Vector output, typography and brand-system consistency are all stronger elsewhere
  • Some studios need commercial-safety terms and IP indemnification, which Leonardo does not offer
  • Power users can hit the generation queue and concurrency ceilings on Leonardo's mid-tier plans

#14.7

Midjourney

Best for: Artists and designers chasing the highest single-image quality

The right switch when one beautiful frame matters more than a broad toolbox. You trade Leonardo's token banking and third-party model menu for a much more opinionated aesthetic and far less configuration.

Consistently the strongest aesthetic output for concept art and editorial work
Unlimited relaxed image generations on Standard and above
No permanent free plan, so there is no way to test it for nothing
No free plan; Basic $10/month, Standard $30, Pro $60, Mega $120 (annual billing saves 20%)
Best for teams and enterprise
Adobe Firefly logo
#24.6Free tier

Adobe Firefly

Best for: Teams, agencies and regulated brands that need commercially safe generation

The switch for legal and procurement teams rather than hobbyists. Firefly's argument is not prettier pictures, it is documented training data and indemnity. You also give up Leonardo's custom model training and real-time canvas.

Models trained on licensed and public-domain content, with Content Credentials attached
IP indemnification available to eligible enterprise customers
The cheapest tier gives only 2,000 generative credits for video and partner models
Free plan with limited daily generations; Standard $9.99/month, Pro $19.99, Pro Plus $49.99, Premium $199.99
Best specialised option for typography
Ideogram logo
#34.6Free tier

Ideogram

Best for: Posters, packaging, logos and any layout where the words must be correct

Pick Ideogram the moment a deliverable has words in it. Its credit system is the most generous recovery net in this list, and the layer editor is something Leonardo does not attempt.

Reliably renders legible, correctly spelled text, including via JSON prompts
Studio editor turns rendered text into editable layers
Free credits only arrive with Google, Apple or Microsoft sign-in
Free plan with 30 credits a week; Plus $20/month or $15/month billed yearly; Pro $60/month or $42/month billed yearly
Best for power users
Recraft logo
#44.6Free tier

Recraft

Best for: Brand teams producing vector artwork, icons and style-consistent sets

The strongest pick for anyone whose deliverables are brand assets rather than pictures. Recraft's vector pipeline has no Leonardo equivalent, and $10 a month on Basic is the cheapest route to commercial rights here.

Native SVG output plus a vectorise tool that converts raster art to editable SVG
Style definitions from 1-10 reference images hold across every generation
The free tier is explicitly not licensed for commercial use
Free plan (no commercial use); Basic $10/month billed annually, Pro $16/month billed annually, Teams $18 per seat per month billed annually
Best free option
Krea logo
#54.5Free tier

Krea

Best for: Anyone who wants a permanent free tier with commercial rights attached

The cleanest free alternative in this guide and the least painful place to test whether you even need a paid image tool. You lose Leonardo's token bank and its enterprise tiers, but nothing else blocks commercial work.

A genuine daily allowance rather than a monthly token drip
Commercial licence even on the free plan, with no card required
Free tier is limited to one concurrent image job and no video concurrency
Free plan with 100 units a day; Basic $9/month or $5/month billed yearly; Pro $35/month or $21/month billed yearly
Best budget bundle
Magnific (Freepik) logo
#64.4

Magnific (Freepik)

Best for: Creators who need a huge stock library alongside AI generation

The right call when your image work is mixed with stock, layout and upscaling. The annual credit pool is unusually forgiving for bursty production, but it is a worse deal than Leonardo if you generate lightly.

250 million-plus stock assets bundled into the same subscription as generation
Credits are valid for a year and do not reset monthly, so they do not evaporate
Rebranded from Freepik in April 2026, so older bookmarks and docs now redirect
Premium $20/month or $14.50/month billed annually; Premium+ $45/month or $33.75/month annually; Pro Starter $110/month or $82.50/month annually
Best for conversational editing
ChatGPT Images logo
#74.5Free tier

ChatGPT Images

Best for: People who already live in a chat interface and revise by conversation

The sensible pick for editorial, product and social work where the brief arrives as text and revisions arrive as sentences. Switch if you are managing hundreds of reusable assets rather than a back-and-forth.

Iterating by talking is far faster than rewriting prompts and re-queuing
Already bundled into subscriptions many people hold
No token bank, no custom model training and no dedicated model picker
Free plan with limited image creation; Go $8/month; Plus $20/month; Pro from $100/month with unlimited and faster image creation
Best free consumer option
Google Gemini (Nano Banana) logo
#84.4Free tier

Google Gemini (Nano Banana)

Best for: Free image generation and search-grounded visuals

The broadest free option for conversational images, and the only one here with live search grounding. You give up custom model training, a real-time canvas and any predictable daily volume.

Image generation is free in the Gemini app without a subscription
Nano Banana 2.1 and 3.1 Flash add Google Search grounding to image results
Daily caps are compute-based rather than a published image count, so they move
Free Gemini account with compute-based image limits; Google AI Plus $4.99/month, AI Pro $19.99/month, AI Ultra $99.99 or $199.99/month
Best lightweight canvas
Playground logo
#94.2Free tier

Playground

Best for: Templated design work and quick multi-model experiments

A design tool with image generation attached, which makes it ideal for social and marketing templates. It is not a Leonardo substitute for model training or video work.

Clean, fast design canvas with premium templates alongside generation
Pro at $12 a month annually is among the cheapest paid tiers in this guide
Three credits a month on free is a sample, not a working tier
Free plan with 3 monthly credits; Pro $15/month or $12/month billed annually; Pro Plus $45/month or $36/month annually
Best for video continuation
Runway logo
#104.3

Runway

Best for: Turning approved still images into video clips

Worth adding alongside an image tool rather than replacing one. Runway is the specialist choice when the deliverable is a moving clip and your stills are already approved.

Purpose-built image-to-video rather than a token-based side feature
Standard's 625 credits a month work out to roughly 78 Gen-4 images at 1080p
The free grant of 125 credits is one-time, so treat it as a trial rather than a tier
Free account with 125 one-time credits; Standard $15/month or $12/month billed annually; Pro $35/month or $28/month annually; Unlimited $95/month or $76/month annually
Best open-source and self-hosted option
Stability AI logo
#114.0Free tier

Stability AI

Best for: Organisations that must run generation on their own infrastructure

The only option here that removes the vendor entirely. Everything else on this list still sends your prompts and outputs to someone else's infrastructure.

Community licence is free for researchers, developers and businesses under $1M revenue
Covers the Stable Diffusion 3.5 suite, SDXL Turbo, Stable Fast 3D and Stable Audio 3.0
You supply the GPUs and the operational overhead
Community licence free below $1M annual revenue; Enterprise licence priced on request; platform API from 25 free credits at 1 credit = $0.01

If you are weighing Leonardo.Ai alternatives in 2026, the short version is this: Midjourney for the best single-image quality, Krea for the best free tier, and Recraft when the deliverable has to be a vector file.

Leonardo.Ai is a genuinely capable platform, not a legacy one. It was founded in Sydney in December 2022, and Canva acquired it in 2024, which is why Leonardo now sits inside one of the largest design ecosystems on the web the background on Leonardo.Ai’s founding and Canva acquisition. It remains active: the company still ships its own foundation models, still runs a developer API, and still posts new models through 2026.

The reasons people look elsewhere are specific rather than general. They want text that spells correctly. They want SVG. They want a free tier that hands them something usable each morning instead of 150 tokens and a public gallery. Or they are being asked by legal to prove where the training data came from.

All prices were read on 14 October 2026. Where a vendor sells both monthly and annual billing, I have said which is which.

Why look for a Leonardo.Ai alternative?

The free tier hands you very little. Leonardo’s free plan gives 150 tokens a day and a token bank of 150, one personal collection, basic quality settings and public creations only. Every image you make there is visible to other Leonardo users. According to Leonardo’s own documentation, paid subscribers retain full ownership and copyright of what they generate, while free-tier users receive a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence and Leonardo keeps the right to use, reproduce and distribute the output. That is a real difference when the work is client-facing.

There is also no free trial on the consumer plans. According to Leonardo’s help centre FAQ, they do not offer free trials and suggest buying a plan to test the product, which means the only way to evaluate a paid tier is to pay for it.

The token system has a soft ceiling that does not behave the way people expect. On Premium and Ultimate you get unlimited relaxed generation, but only on a specific list of models. Leonardo’s relaxed generation covers its own models and select hosted ones - Lucid Origin, Lucid Realism, Phoenix 1.0, Phoenix 0.9, Flux Dev, Flux Schnell, and for video Hailuo 2.3, Wan 2.6 and the Motion family. Models running on external providers’ servers, such as GPT-Image-2, Nano Banana 2, Seedream 5.0 Pro, Kling 3.0 Turbo and Veo 3.1, always consume tokens no matter what. Flow State always consumes tokens.

“Relaxed Generation lets you keep generating images and videos without extra token cost, but at a lower priority than the main queue. Processing time fluctuates with overall demand.”

That is Leonardo’s own wording from its official pricing page, which is also the source for the plan figures used throughout this guide. The practical consequence: the models you probably want most for photoreal work are the ones that still bill you.

Concurrency and queues get tight before the token allowance does. Essential allows two simultaneous generations, Premium three, Ultimate six, with queue limits of five, ten and twenty. Teams get six concurrent and a queue of twenty. These are real ceilings when you are running a concept-art sprint across eight scenes.

Custom models are a one-way door. Leonardo’s help centre confirms there is no way to download a custom model you trained. If you leave, your style library stays behind.

Legal comfort is thin. Leonardo holds SOC 2 Type I and Type II accreditation and displays a GDPR badge, which is a genuine plus for procurement. But it does not offer the enterprise IP indemnification that Adobe attaches to eligible Firefly customers, and it does not publish the training-data provenance story that Firefly is built on.

How I chose these alternatives

Prices and features were checked against vendor pricing pages, plan comparisons, help centres and API documentation on 14 October 2026.

Leonardo’s prices, token allowances and plan features come from a 7 October 2026 archive of its pricing page, so those figures may lag changes made during the following week. Other pricing in this guide was checked on 14 October 2026.

Scoring was editorial judgement across twelve axes: output quality, ease of use, pricing, free-tier value, integrations, collaboration, customisation, reliability, privacy and security, platform support, migration difficulty and scalability. The ratings in this article are my own five-point editorial scores.

I also confirmed each product is currently active. One naming change matters here: Freepik rebranded as Magnific in April 2026.

“Freepik is now Magnific. Same company, same team, same platform. Nothing has been replaced or shut down.”

Logins, subscriptions, downloads and enterprise contracts carried over, and both api.freepik.com and api.magnific.com remain live with existing keys working on either. If you have an old Freepik bookmark or integration in a codebase, it still works, but the docs now live under a different name.

1. Midjourney - Best overall

Midjourney is the strongest general-purpose Leonardo.Ai alternative for people whose core job is producing one excellent image at a time.

It wins on output, and that is not a close call for concept art, editorial illustration or stylised work. Midjourney has always prioritised a house aesthetic over raw model coverage, and that focus is the reason its images tend to look considered rather than merely competent. Leonardo deliberately runs the opposite strategy, offering a wide menu of in-house and partner models and letting you pick per project.

Best for: illustrators, art directors, concept artists and anyone whose output is judged on look rather than on throughput. If you already read our Midjourney review, the short version is that it remains the quality benchmark.

Pricing and free tier

Midjourney sells subscription plans only. There is no permanent free tier, which is the single biggest reason people hesitate.

Per Midjourney’s official plan comparison, Basic is $10 a month on monthly billing or $96 a year, Standard is $30 monthly or $288 a year, Pro is $60 monthly or $576 a year, and Mega is $120 monthly or $1,152 a year. Annual billing works out to $8, $24, $48 and $96 a month, so the 20% discount is real and worth taking if you know you will stay.

Fast GPU time runs 3.3 hours on Basic, 15 on Standard, 30 on Pro and 60 on Mega, with extra GPU time purchasable at $4 an hour. Relax mode gives unlimited images from Standard upward. Stealth mode, which is how you keep generations private, is Pro and Mega only. Maximum concurrent image prompts go 3, 3, 12 and 12 across the four tiers.

One term worth reading rather than skimming: Midjourney requires businesses with more than $1 million in gross annual revenue to hold Pro or Mega.

Private generationsAny paid planPro and Mega

Third-party modelsYes, many hosted optionsNo

Verdict: switch to Midjourney if image quality is the bottleneck and you can live without a multi-model menu. Stay on Leonardo if you rely on training your own style models, or if the ability to drop in a new partner model the week it launches matters to you.

2. Adobe Firefly - Best for teams and regulated brands

Adobe Firefly is the alternative to pick when someone above you asks where the training data came from, not when you are chasing the prettiest picture.

Its entire pitch is defensibility. Firefly’s own models are trained on licensed content and public domain content where copyright has expired, and Adobe attaches Content Credentials to outputs. Eligible enterprise customers can receive IP indemnification for select Firefly outputs. That is a procurement conversation you cannot have with Leonardo, Midjourney or Recraft.

Best for: agencies, in-house creative teams, publishers and any brand working under legal review.

Pricing and free tier

Read on 14 October 2026 from Adobe’s Firefly plans page, which is the vendor’s own primary source. There is a free plan with limited daily generations. Paid tiers are Standard at $9.99 a month with 2,000 generative credits, Pro at $19.99 with 4,000, Pro Plus at $49.99 with 10,000, and Premium at $199.99 with 50,000 credits plus unlimited access to the Adobe Firefly Video Model.

Two details change the maths. First, every paid tier includes unlimited standard image and vector generations - generative credits only pay for video, audio and partner models. Second, Creative Cloud Pro at $69.99 a month bundles 4,000 Firefly credits with 20-plus Creative Cloud apps, which is often the cheaper route if you already use Adobe.

Leonardo.Ai compared with Adobe Firefly

Leonardo gives you more creative tooling: custom model training, a real-time canvas, Flow State and a deeper token bank. Firefly gives you legal cover and a credit pool that sits inside Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, Lightroom and Express. For a solo artist, Leonardo is the better creative tool. For a team with a legal department, Firefly is the better business tool.

Verdict: switch if indemnification or documented training data is a hard requirement. If neither applies, Firefly’s raw output quality will feel like a downgrade next to what you have now.

3. Ideogram - Best for typography and posters

Ideogram is the pick when the image has to contain readable words. That is a small-sounding specialisation that covers an enormous amount of commercial design work.

Best for: posters, packaging mock-ups, logos, social announcements and any layout where a misspelt headline is a rejection.

Pricing and free tier

Per Ideogram’s plans and credits documentation, which was last verified by the vendor on 1 October 2026 and which I read on 14 October: Free is $0 with 30 credits a week, Plus is $20 a month or $15 a month billed yearly at $180 a year with 2,400 credits, Pro is $60 a month or $42 billed yearly at $504 a year with 7,500 credits, and Team is $30 or $20 per user per month with 3,600 credits each and a two-user minimum. Enterprise is custom. The old Basic plan has been retired.

Two fine print points. Free credits only arrive if you sign in with Google, Apple or Microsoft; an email-and-password account gets none. And on the free plan everything you generate is public, while Plus and above keep new images private until you publish them.

Leonardo.Ai compared with Ideogram

Ideogram’s credit recovery is its standout feature. Once your monthly credits run out on Plus, Pro or Team, you can keep generating with Ideogram’s own models in a slower queue with no limit. Leonardo’s equivalent, relaxed generation, is restricted to a named list of models. Ideogram’s exception list is also explicit: custom models, partner models, reference-image generations, edits and upscales still need credits.

Ideogram’s Studio editor converts rendered text into editable layers, which Leonardo has no equivalent for. Leonardo keeps custom model training, which Ideogram has but with tighter limits.

Verdict: switch if typography is load-bearing. If it is not, Ideogram is a weaker general tool than Leonardo, and you would be running two subscriptions rather than one.

4. Recraft - Best for power users and brand systems

Recraft is the strongest pick for anyone whose deliverables are brand assets rather than pictures, and it is my choice for high-volume professional work.

What Leonardo cannot do is produce a real vector file. Recraft’s V4 and V4.1 models output SVG natively, and its vectorise tool converts an existing PNG or JPG into an editable SVG for $0.01 a request. For logo systems, icon sets and anything that has to survive a print vendor or a developer handoff, that is decisive.

Best for: brand designers, agencies and developers producing iconography and logo families.

Pricing and free tier

Read on 14 October 2026 from Recraft’s pricing page. The free plan gives limited free credits, three generations per style per day, three image uploads a day and up to two images per generation - and critically, it carries no commercial use and Recraft owns the output. Paid plans grant full ownership and commercial rights with private generations, and images created on a paid plan stay private and yours even after you cancel.

Basic is $10 a month billed annually at $120 a year with 1,000 credits. Pro is $16 a month billed annually at $192 with 2,000 credits and video generation added. Teams is $18 per seat per month billed annually. The page states that annual billing saves 20%, so month-to-month pricing is higher than these headline figures. Basic allows up to 20 images per generation and five parallel jobs; Pro raises that to ten.

Leonardo.Ai compared with Recraft

Leonardo offers more third-party models and deeper video. Recraft offers vector output, a Style Library that holds a look across 1 to 10 reference images, and an API where models start at about $0.007 per image. Recraft’s free tier is the weakest on this list for commercial work - no commercial licence at all.

Verdict: switch if you need SVG, if you are producing brand sets at volume, or if you want ownership terms that are unambiguous from day one. Keep Leonardo if you need Leonardo’s video lineup or its model breadth.

5. Krea - Best free option

Krea is the free alternative I would actually recommend, because it is the only one here whose free tier includes a commercial licence.

Best for: freelancers testing whether they need a paid image tool at all, students, and anyone who wants daily output without a subscription.

Pricing and free tier

Per Krea’s pricing page, read on 14 October 2026: Free gives 100 units a day at $0 a month with no credit card required. Basic is $9 a month, or $5 a month billed yearly, with 5,000 units a month. Pro is $35 a month, or $21 billed yearly, with 20,000 units. Max is $105 a month, or $63 billed yearly, with 60,000 units. Annual billing is advertised as saving 40%. There is also a Business tier at $200 a month and an Enterprise tier on request.

The free plan is more useful than the number suggests. It includes full access to real-time models that render as you type or draw, all image models, all 3D and lipsync models, limited LoRA training on up to 50 images, upscaling up to 2K, and a commercial licence. What you lose is concurrency - one image job at a time and no video concurrency - plus the paid upscalers that reach 22K.

Leonardo.Ai compared with Krea

Leonardo’s token bank and rollover system is more sophisticated: paid plans carry unused tokens into a rollover bank capped by tier, and top-up tokens never expire. Krea’s compute units are simpler and do not roll.

Leonardo wins on video depth, on custom model training limits and on enterprise tiers. Krea wins decisively on the free tier, on real-time generation and on the node-based workflow builder that turns connected models into reusable apps.

Verdict: start on Krea’s free plan. If a week of real work does not push you to pay, you have saved a subscription. If it does, the $5 monthly-equivalent Basic tier is one of the cheapest credible paid plans available.

6. Magnific (Freepik) - Best budget bundle

Magnific, which was Freepik until April 2026, is the alternative to pick when your image work is mixed with stock, layout and upscaling.

Best for: content marketers and small teams who need generated visuals and stock assets in the same place.

Pricing and free tier

Read on 14 October 2026. Premium is $20 a month, or $14.50 a month billed annually, with 240,000 credits a year. Premium+ is $45 a month, or $33.75 billed annually, with 600,000 credits a year and unlimited generations. Pro Starter is $110 a month, or $82.50 billed annually, with 1.5 million credits. Prices exclude VAT.

The unusual mechanic is the credit pool. Credits are valid for one year and do not reset monthly, so a heavy quarter is not wasted, and Premium and above advertise unlimited generations across more than 30 models including Nano Banana 2 and Kling 2.5. You also get 250 million-plus stock assets, API access, Magnific for ComfyUI and MCP plugins.

There is no free plan for the AI tools, and the annual credits expire on their own schedule whether you use them or not.

Leonardo.Ai compared with Magnific

Leonardo’s monthly token model suits steady daily work better. Magnific’s annual model suits bursty campaign work. Leonardo has the stronger standalone image tooling; Magnific has the stock library, which nothing else on this list matches.

Verdict: switch if you are constantly hunting for stock photography, illustrations, PSDs or icons alongside generation. Otherwise Leonardo’s monthly reset is the more predictable arrangement.

7. ChatGPT Images - Best for conversational editing

ChatGPT’s image generation is the pick when the brief arrives as prose and the revisions arrive as sentences.

Best for: product marketers, editorial teams and founders who describe what they want and iterate by talking rather than by rewriting prompts.

Pricing and free tier

OpenAI’s own ChatGPT pricing page, read on 14 October 2026, lists four consumer tiers. Free is $0 a month and includes limited image creation. Go is $8 a month and adds more image creation. Plus is $20 a month and promises more complex and accurate image creation. Pro starts at $100 a month and delivers unlimited and faster image creation, subject to abuse guardrails.

That is the honest picture. Only Pro states a volume guarantee, and Plus describes quality rather than quantity.

Leonardo.Ai compared with ChatGPT Images

Leonardo gives you a model picker, a token bank, custom model training and structured collections. ChatGPT gives you a conversation. For a designer producing forty variations of a hero image, Leonardo’s collections and presets are more useful. For someone whose client keeps saying “make it warmer but keep the composition”, a chat thread is faster than a re-queue.

Verdict: switch if your work is brief-driven. Do not switch if you are building an asset library - chat threads are a poor home for structured, reusable, versioned imagery.

8. Google Gemini with Nano Banana - Best free consumer option

Gemini’s native image generation is the broadest free option in this guide and the only one with live search grounding.

Best for: anyone who wants free, conversational image generation, and for visuals that need to reflect current information.

Pricing and free tier

The free Gemini account includes image generation with limits that Google describes as compute-based rather than a fixed daily image count, so they shift with demand. Paid tiers are Google AI Plus at $4.99 a month, AI Pro at $19.99, and AI Ultra at $99.99 or $199.99 a month. Nano Banana Pro access scales by tier: limited on the lower plans, expanded on Pro, highest on Ultra. Image editing in the app sits behind an 18+ age gate.

Leonardo.Ai compared with Gemini

Gemini’s strengths are multi-turn character consistency across a long conversation and Google Search grounding in Nano Banana 2.1 and 3.1 Flash, which means an image can incorporate live data. Its weaknesses are predictable volume, which you do not get, and the complete absence of custom model training or a real-time canvas. The Gemini API publishes no free tier for the image models, so developers pay immediately.

Verdict: switch if free conversational generation is the goal and predictable daily volume is not. Pair it with a paid tool rather than relying on it as a production engine.

9. Playground - Best lightweight canvas

Playground is a design canvas with generation attached, which makes it a natural fit for social and marketing templates.

Best for: marketers producing repeatable template-driven content rather than bespoke art.

Pricing and free tier

Read on 14 October 2026. Free allows up to 10 images every three hours and 3 monthly credits across Muse Image, Nano Banana, GPT Image 2, GPT Image 2.5 and Seedream, with a worldwide royalty-free commercial licence. Pro is $15 a month or $12 a month billed annually at $144 a year, with 150 monthly credits, up to 75 images every three hours and AI editing up to 2K. Pro Plus is $45 a month or $36 billed annually at $432 a year, with 1,000 monthly credits, unlimited generations, Nano Banana Pro access at four credits each, editing up to 4K and API access on request.

Leonardo.Ai compared with Playground

Playground is cheaper and template-driven. Leonardo is deeper, with custom model training and a much stronger video offering. Three credits a month on the free tier is a sample, not a working tier, though the three-hourly allowance partly compensates.

Verdict: switch if your output is template-shaped. Keep Leonardo if you need trained models or video.

10. Runway - Best for image-to-video

Runway is a specialist video tool, and it is at its best added to an image workflow rather than swapped in for one.

Best for: teams whose approved still images need to become short clips for social and product pages.

Pricing and free tier

Read on 14 October 2026. There is a free account with 125 credits, but the vendor describes them as one-time, so I would treat it as a trial rather than a tier. Standard is $15 a month or $12 billed annually with 625 credits a month, which the page converts to about 78 Gen-4 images at 1080p. Pro is $35 a month or $28 billed annually with 2,250 credits. Unlimited is $95 a month or $76 billed annually. Pro and above include unlimited 4K video upscaling.

Leonardo.Ai compared with Runway

Leonardo’s Motion family and its hosted video models sit inside the same subscription as image generation, with relaxed video generation on Ultimate. Runway is a dedicated video pipeline with different economics, where credits are weighted heavily toward motion. Its image generation is the weaker half of the equation.

Verdict: do not replace Leonardo with Runway. Add Runway if clips are a deliverable and motion quality is what your current setup is failing to deliver.

11. Stability AI - Best open-source and self-hosted option

Stability AI is the only option in this guide that removes the vendor from the loop entirely.

Best for: organisations with data-residency requirements, research teams and anyone who already operates GPU infrastructure.

Pricing and free tier

Per Stability AI’s licensing terms, the Community licence is free for researchers, developers, small businesses and creators with under $1 million in annual revenue, and covers Stable Diffusion 3.5, SDXL Turbo, Stable Fast 3D and Stable Audio 3.0. The Enterprise licence is custom-priced and adds implementation support, with custom model training and consulting available as upgrades. Separately, the developer platform starts you with 25 free credits at one credit per cent, with Stable Image Ultra at 8 credits and Stable Diffusion 3.5 Large at 6.5.

Leonardo.Ai compared with Stability AI

There is no comparison on ease of use, and there should not be. Leonardo is a creative environment; Stability AI is infrastructure. What you gain is that prompts and outputs never leave your own environment, and that you are not rationed by someone else’s token economy.

Verdict: switch only if you have the hardware and the team to run it. For everyone else this is a five-year infrastructure project, not a subscription change.

Which Leonardo.Ai alternative should you choose?

  1. You want the best-looking images and can pay $10 a month - Midjourney Basic at $10, or Standard at $30 if you want unlimited relaxed generations.
  2. You need correct spelling inside images - Ideogram Plus at $20 a month, or $15 billed annually.
  3. Your deliverables are logos, icons or brand systems - Recraft Basic at $10 a month on annual billing.
  4. You want a real free tier that still earns money - Krea Free, 100 units a day with a commercial licence.
  5. You need legal cover and shared team billing - Adobe Firefly Standard at $9.99, moving to Pro at $19.99 if you need video credits.
  6. Your work mixes generated visuals with stock assets - Magnific Premium at $14.50 a month billed annually.
  7. You revise by conversation rather than by prompt rewriting - ChatGPT Plus at $20 a month.
  8. You want free conversational images with search grounding - Gemini’s free account, accepting that daily caps move.
  9. Your output is template-driven social and marketing content - Playground Pro at $12 a month billed annually.
  10. Your still images need to become clips - Runway Standard at $15 a month, alongside whatever image tool you keep.
  11. Your data cannot leave your infrastructure - Stability AI’s free Community licence, if you have the GPUs.

When you should keep Leonardo.Ai

Leonardo is still the right call in several situations, and I would rather say so than push a switch for its own sake.

Keep it if you train custom models. Ten personal models on Essential, twenty on Premium and fifty on Ultimate, with Leonardo explicitly not allowing download. No alternative in this guide replicates that scale of in-platform style training.

Keep it if model breadth is your strategy. Leonardo now hosts Lucid Origin, Lucid Realism, Phoenix 1.0 and 0.9, plus FLUX.2 Pro, Ideogram 3.0 and 4.5, the GPT Image family, Nano Banana 2 and Pro, and the Seedream line, with video from the Motion family, Hailuo, Wan and Veo. If your workflow is “try whichever model fits this brief”, no single-model tool serves you.

Keep it if Flow State matters. The real-time canvas, where a sketch becomes a finished image as you draw, has no peer in this list. Krea comes closest with real-time models.

Keep it if you are on a team plan. Starter at $72 a month for three seats and Growth at $144 for three, both with private team generations, shared tokens, unlimited collections and SSO on Growth, are competitive for a Canva-owned platform with SOC 2 Type I and II accreditation.

Keep it if you already generate video inside the same subscription. Relaxed video generation on Ultimate covers Hailuo 2.3, Wan 2.6 and the Motion family.

When switching makes sense

Text keeps coming back misspelled. Ideogram, and nothing else on this list, treats this as its core competency.

Legal has asked about training data provenance. Adobe Firefly, with licensed and public domain training data, Content Credentials on outputs, and indemnification for eligible enterprise customers.

Your client needs editable vector files. Recraft, whose SVG output and vectorise tool have no Leonardo equivalent.

You are paying for tokens you rarely spend. If you hold Premium or Ultimate for occasional work, Krea at $9 a month or Recraft Basic at $10 a month on annual billing will cost less. Only upgrade on Leonardo when you genuinely burn the allowance.

Concurrency is throttling your sprint. If jobs are queuing behind each other, your real options are Leonardo Ultimate at six concurrent, Recraft Pro at ten parallel image generations, or Midjourney Pro at twelve concurrent prompts.

You need unlimited generation on the models you actually use. Leonardo’s relaxed generation excludes partner models. Ideogram’s post-credit queue covers its own models with no limit, which is a cleaner guarantee.

How to migrate without chaos

Start by exporting the images, not the settings. Leonardo lets you download your generations, but custom models cannot be downloaded at all. Assume a rebuild.

Rebuild your style library before you cancel. On Recraft, a Style definition built from 1 to 10 reference images reproduces your look without a training step. On Leonardo, a custom model trained on 10 to 20 images is what you are leaving behind, so recreate it in the new tool from the same reference set.

Rehearse your top ten prompts. Take the prompts that produced work you were happy with and run them in the new tool before you cancel anything. Style and aspect ratio behave differently everywhere.

Re-map your tokens to credits. Leonardo tokens, Ideogram credits, Krea compute units, Recraft credits and Midjourney GPU hours are not comparable. Work out roughly how many images a month you actually produced, then price that volume on the new tool rather than comparing headline numbers.

Do not cancel in the same week you switch. Keep one month overlapping. Most of these tools bill monthly and refunds are manual, and Leonardo’s own help centre says refunds are assessed by a human agent.

Move your API separately if you use one. Leonardo’s API runs on API credits that are separate from web subscriptions and do not expire, so they are not lost. But the endpoint, model IDs and request shape change entirely on any migration.

Final recommendation

Best overall: Midjourney. The quality gap on single images is wide enough that most creators who leave Leonardo for one reason end up here.

Best free: Krea. A daily allowance, a commercial licence and no card required beat a one-time trial or three credits a month.

Best for power users: Recraft. Commercial rights, private generations, parallel jobs, style consistency and a per-image API at the cheapest paid tier in this guide.

Best for teams and enterprise: Adobe Firefly. Not for the prettiest pictures, for the most defensible ones.

Stay on Leonardo.Ai if you train custom models, if you want the widest menu of in-house and partner models in one subscription, if Flow State is central to how you work, or if you are on a team plan inside the Canva ecosystem. It is an active, well-funded product inside a larger one, not a fading one.

Switch if a specific capability is blocking you - correct text, real vectors, indemnity, unlimited use of a particular model, or a free tier that pays for itself.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Leonardo.Ai alternative overall? Midjourney. When people compare Leonardo.Ai alternatives in 2026, Midjourney comes out on top for most people replacing Leonardo, because it produces the strongest individual images with the least configuration and its Standard plan at $30 a month includes unlimited relaxed generations. The tradeoff is that Midjourney has no free plan and no equivalent to Leonardo’s custom model training.

Is there a free alternative to Leonardo.Ai? Krea. Its free plan gives 100 compute units a day, a commercial licence, access to real-time models and 50-image LoRA training, with no card required. The catch is one image job at a time and upscaling capped at 2K. Gemini’s free account is the broader option if conversational generation matters more than daily volume.

Does Leonardo.Ai still have a free plan? Yes, with 150 tokens a day, a 150 token bank, one personal collection, basic quality settings and public creations only. There is no free trial on the paid consumer plans, according to Leonardo’s own help centre.

Which Leonardo.Ai alternative is best for typography and posters? Ideogram. It renders correctly spelled text inside images and converts that text into editable layers in Studio. Plus costs $20 a month, or $15 billed annually, with 2,400 credits a month, and keeps generating in a slower queue once credits run out.

Which alternative produces real vector artwork? Recraft. Its V4 and V4.1 models output SVG directly, and its vectorise tool turns a raster image into editable SVG for $0.01 a request. Basic is $10 a month billed annually and is the cheapest route here to full commercial rights with private generations.

What is the best Leonardo.Ai alternative for a team? Adobe Firefly. Standard starts at $9.99 a month, every paid tier includes unlimited standard image and vector generations, credits are shared across Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere and Lightroom, and eligible enterprise customers can receive IP indemnification.

Is Midjourney cheaper than Leonardo.Ai? At the entry point, slightly. Midjourney Basic is $10 a month against Leonardo Essential at $12. But Midjourney Standard at $30 matches Leonardo Premium, and Midjourney Pro at $60 matches Leonardo Ultimate at $60. Billed annually, Midjourney falls to $8, $24, $48 and $96 a month against Leonardo’s $10, $24 and $48.

Can I keep my custom models if I switch away from Leonardo.Ai? No. Leonardo’s help centre confirms custom models cannot be downloaded. Treat any switch as a rebuild of your style library rather than a migration, and recreate it in the new tool from the same reference images.

Who owns images generated on Leonardo.Ai’s free plan? Leonardo.Ai does. Paid subscribers retain full ownership and copyright; free-tier users receive a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence while Leonardo retains rights to use, reproduce and distribute the output. Free-plan creations are also public.

What happened to Freepik, one of the usual Leonardo.Ai alternatives? Freepik was rebranded as Magnific in April 2026. The company says logins, subscriptions, downloads, team seats and enterprise contracts carry over unchanged, and that both api.freepik.com and api.magnific.com are live with existing keys working on either.
