Imagen is Google DeepMind's text-to-image diffusion model family, first introduced in May 2022. Imagen 4 (released 20 May 2025 at Google I/O, models imagen-4.0-generate-001 / imagen-4.0-ultra-generate-001 / imagen-4.0-fast-generate-001) is the newest and final Imagen generation: it delivers up to 2K outputs, improved typography and 1:1, 3:4, 4:3, 9:16 and 16:9 aspect ratios, with SynthID watermarking on every output. Imagen 4 is now deprecated — Imagen 3 already shut down, and the Imagen 4 endpoints on the Gemini API shut down on 17 August 2026 — with Google directing developers to its Gemini 'Nano Banana' image models (Nano Banana 2 / gemini-3.1-flash-image, Nano Banana 2 Lite / gemini-3.1-flash-lite-image, Nano Banana Pro / gemini-3-pro-image). No Imagen 5 has shipped, so Imagen is no longer Google's flagship image product and persists mainly as a legacy Vertex AI offering.
